The Problem

Council Tree root protection required for driveway access and ground protection.

The Situation

Hastings District Council has some big gum trees in a car park in Havelock North. They needed to allow vehicles to drive around these trees without them suffering through compression of the feeder roots and lack of air, water and nutrients getting to them.

The Solution

Very simple.

Minimal ground preparation The existing surface was grass that had a thin layer of topsoil with clay beneath that. The vegetation was skimmed off and the area reshaped requiring only minimal excavation.
Forms to the contours of the ground SurePave was then laid directly onto the excavated ground. Note the contour that SurePave can easily form to.
Aluminum Paver Restraint System to separate Aluminum paver restraint system, SureLine was used at each end of the SurePave area to retain and separate the loose chip filling from the chip seal finish of the car park.
Quick, easy filling of ground reinforcement system When laid the SurePave panels were then filled with a Grade 3 (19mm) roading chip. This was applied using a tip truck which backed over the area spreading the chip with a roller spreader attachment as it went. This is a very safe, quick and easy method to evenly fill the paving system.
Topping gravel was used Once the 19mm chip was in, the area was the topped with a 7 – 9mm chip to match in with the chip seal that joins the permeable area.
Seamless transition from chip seal to reinforced driveway area Once finished you would barely know that SurePave has been installed and the trees are getting all the nutrients they need without being affected by compaction because SurePave spreads the load.
